The strength of the book lies also in its capacity to elaborate issues at a deeper psychological level. The discussion about job titles and interpersonal relationship in China is also a good example. Recent years have witnessed quite a few China business books racing to market, such as Mr. China Clissold, and One billion customers McGregor, These books are very readable, very insightful, and very inspirational. But unfortunately their lack of the academic touch makes them less communicative in research community and in China-related executive education. Throughout the book alongside the main text you can find pedagogically well illustrated visual models, inspiring textual highlights and useful managerial tips which help facilitate your reading and understanding no matter you are academics or managers.
While being taken by the novelty, scale and quality of this volume, I also see areas that could be improved. The book is full of exciting quotes some of which suggest that the executives seem to have different views on certain issues. In what situations and under what circumstances the executives mean what they say was a question which I had when reading the text.
Bleak House Books
The reader would have benefited a bit more had the book included more contextual information and descriptive stories. As indicated by its title, the book is about the experience of 20 top executives in China, but the book ends up involving a total number of 28 executives with eight consultants being also included. This book has not touched the CSR issue. Finally, the 20 top China CEOs are all males.
It would have been more exciting had a number of female CEOs also been included in this study. To sum up, the book has made a very important contribution to China business studies. The book is also relevant for inspiring research in international business. For example, the debates adaptation vs. International business researchers interested in HR, cross cultural management and leadership, business strategy, intellectual property rights, consumer behaviour, international negotiation, etc. Accessed March 6.
