My personal favourite is Sir Orfeo from the Breton Lai - the Medieval version of the Orpheus myth where the heroine is kidnapped by the queen of the fairies. My Favorite "Romance" Books!

The selection is wide with a dozen romances in this compact volume. The gloss is great because it doesn't over-gloss like the Norton Critical Edition does , and yet highlights the more unusual words. These are well contextualized and well introduced. Can only think to say that a twin-sequel should be produces to include all the romances that this one can't. Nov 11, Robert rated it really liked it. This book is pretty much canon for anybody studying Middle English beyond the undergrad level. This collection has several different permutations, and it is worth one's time to explore the margin and footnotes to see which is best for you.

He added that families and communities did not tend to sit together and swap stories nowadays, because they are distracted by television and the internet. Speaking at the Oxford Literary Festival yesterday, Pullman read from his book of Grimm's fairytales "for young and old" as he joked children should be exposed to stories, "the bloodthirstier the better". In it, he has selected 50 of his favourite traditional and little-known stories to retell as close to the original as possible for the modern audience.

Philip Pullman: Islamists treat girls wickedly. Philip Pullman: teaching leaves pupils hating books. A Grimm tale for the modern age. As well as adaptations of better-known stories such as Cinderella, it also includes darker tales including incest, death and stepsisters having their eyes gouged out.

You will enjoy it and they will enjoy it even more. When asked whether this included some of the darker elements of the original tales, he joked: "The bloodthirstier the better. Little scoundrels, give them something good.
